Continental to Launch Massive R&D Investments to Stay Ahead in the AI Race

Not less than three new large-scale R&D projects have been announced by Continental to further strengthen its Hungarian operation. The investments worth EUR 47.6 million will create 280 new jobs in total thru 2024, and they are aimed at developing solutions in the realm of autonomous driving and automotive safety.

Continental Group is present in Hungary with all three of its business areas, namely automotive, tires and industrial solutions. Its subsidiaries employ some 8,000 people in seven different locations all over the country. The local portfolio consists of an artificial intelligence development center, a vehicle dynamics development center and proving ground, six plants and a regional tire trade hub.

The Group now announced to intensify its R&D activity by launching three projects predominantly in the field of AI. Continental Automotive Hungary Kft. invests EUR 15.8 million to create 90 new jobs and develop autonomous and highly automated driving systems as well as functions. It will further spend EUR 6.7 million with the aim of carrying out developments that ensure vehicle safety and implement industrial standards, while allowing to hire 40 additional employees. Both projects will take place at the Budapest and Veszprém sites.

On the other hand, Continental Autonomous Mobility Kft. undertakes to carry out the development of L4 self-driving software solutions as well as driver-assistance systems for EUR 25.1 million. The investment will create 150 new jobs.

Continental has been continuously growing its competence and expertise in AI for computer vision, environmental perception and more ever since it opened its Artificial Intelligence Development Center in the Hungarian capital in 2018. The announced projects are set to give the company another boost to stay ahead in the global AI race.
