As a global player in every major area of glass manufacturing, the Turkish Şişecam will establish its first European glass-packaging facility in Kaposvár. This greenfield investment of EUR 220 million is to have an annual net production capacity of 330,000 tons. With two individual furnaces, the new facility is expected to begin its operations in 2023, reaching full capacity by 2025.
One of Turkey's industrial groups with the longest history, Şişecam, has become a global player, which plays a leading role in the production of all types of glass and chemicals, including soda-chromium compounds. The group produces flat glass, glassware, and glass packaging in 43 factories, including 16 plants in Turkey and 27 abroad, and nearly half of their products are exported to 150 countries around the world.
The company is the second largest producer of glassware in the world, and at the same time occupies fifth place in glass packaging and flat glass production worldwide.
Şişecam, which decided to set up its first European glass-packaging plant, has chosen Hungary as the site of the investment. The greenfield investment in the Kaposvár Industrial Park of EUR 220 million creates 329 new jobs in Somogy County. The facility equipped with two furnaces will have an annual net production capacity of 330,000 tons of packaging glass.
In addition to the Hungarian market, the company intends to distribute its products mainly to European markets, mostly in the food industry, in the wine and alcoholic, as well as non-alcoholic drinks segment.
